Lake Tahoe is one of the most boat-rich freshwater destinations in the country. From the Tahoe Keys marina to Sand Harbor, Glenbrook Bay, Carnelian Bay, and Tahoe City, the boating community ranges from family pontoons to high-end cruisers and historic wood-hull classics. Quality marine upholstery is what keeps these vessels presentable and comfortable across the seasons.
Why Tahoe marine work is different
Marine upholstery is not residential upholstery with different materials. The environment imposes constraints that demand specific construction:
- UV at altitude. Tahoe boats see substantially more UV than coastal boats. Solution-dyed marine fabrics and UV-stable threads are not optional — they are the only option.
- Freshwater splashing. Closed-cell foam (not absorbent residential foam) is essential. Water that gets onto the cushion needs to drain, not soak.
- Winter storage. Boats sit covered in cold storage for six months. Mildew-resistant materials and treatments are mandatory.
- Intense summer use. Day-on-the-water use means wet swimsuits, food, sunscreen, sand — everything tough on upholstery.
- Visibility. Boat upholstery is on display, often within arm's length of guests. Workmanship shows.
Materials we recommend for Tahoe
Fabric and vinyl
For helm chairs, captain seats, and most boat seating, marine-grade vinyl is standard. We work primarily with Spradling Naugahyde and Morbern marine vinyls — both offer industry-leading UV stability, mildew resistance, and a hand that feels closer to leather than vinyl. For cabin interiors and helm cushions where exposure is reduced, Sunbrella Marine in a velvet, chenille, or canvas weave can be appropriate.
Foam
Marine-grade closed-cell foam exclusively. Standard residential foam absorbs water and grows mildew — non-negotiable disqualifier for boat work.
Thread
Tenara or Sunguard PTFE-coated thread for all stitching. Standard polyester thread degrades in UV within a season or two; PTFE thread lasts the life of the cushion.
Construction details
- Drainage weep holes at the lowest point of every cushion
- Reinforced corners on cushions that bear weight in non-flat orientations
- Snap or hook-and-loop attachments rather than buttons that snag
- Vinyl-piped welts that resist UV better than fabric-wrapped welts
What we handle
- Helm chairs and captain's seats — the most-used seats on most boats
- Bow cushions and sun pads — large-surface lounging cushions
- V-berth mattresses and salon cushions — cabin interior comfort
- Cockpit lounging cushions — varying shapes, custom-fitted
- Helm dashboard wrap — vinyl-wrap restoration of sun-bleached helm panels
- Custom-built cushions — for any layout we can measure and pattern
Logistics for Tahoe boat owners
We work with boat owners in several ways:
- Boatyard pickup. We coordinate directly with Tahoe Keys, Cave Rock, Sierra Boat Company, and other Tahoe boatyards. The boat stays where it is; we collect the cushions.
- Dock pickup. For boats kept on private docks, we collect cushions in person at your scheduled time.
- Off-season scheduling. Most major boat upholstery projects are scheduled October through April so the boat is ready for summer use.
- Dealer partnerships. We work with Tahoe-area boat dealers on pre-sale refurbishment and customer warranty work.
Tahoe boats deserve the same level of craft as Tahoe homes. The visibility, the use, and the climate all demand it.
